Kiyoshikojin Seichoji Temple is a temple with a unique form of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, and as such, there are specific etiquette and precautions to take when visiting.
Here, we will introduce the correct way to worship, actions to avoid, and beliefs surrounding white snakes.

5.1 Proper Way to Worship at Kiyoshikojin
Kiyoshikojin Seichoji Temple has a unique way of worshiping that combines elements of both shrines and temples.

  1. Purify yourself at the temizuya (purification fountain): Upon entering the temple grounds, first purify your hands and mouth at the temizuya (purification fountain).

  1. Etiquette at the Haiden: When entering the Haiden, you should follow the etiquette of “one bow, three claps, one bow.”
    This signifies devotion to the Three Treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
  2. Offering a coin: Place your offering in the offering box and pray sincerely for your wish.
  3. Receiving a goshuin (temple seal): You can also receive a goshuin (temple seal) as proof of your visit.

You can also apply for fortune-telling slips and prayers at the attendant hall to the left of the Haiden.

5.2 Things Not to Do
Please avoid the following behaviors at Kiyoshikojin Seichoji Temple.

  • How to Enshrine the Ofuda: Do not enshrine the Sanbo Kojin Gosonkei Ofuda in the Buddhist altar.
  • Handling Small Coins at the Kojin Kageko: At the Kojin Kageko, located behind the worship hall, you should receive small coins, wrap them in paper, and put them in your wallet to take home.

It is customary to return double the amount the next time you visit. Avoid taking the coins and leaving them unreturned.

・Photography Etiquette: When taking photos within the temple grounds, please be considerate to other worshippers.

5.3 The Legend of the White Snake and the Secret of Faith
On the approach to Kiyoshikojin Seichoji Temple, there is a shop that keeps white snakes, which are said to bring good fortune to visitors.

・White Snake Faith: White snakes are considered messengers of Benzaiten, bringing wealth and prosperity, and it is believed that if one appears in a dream, your financial luck will increase.

・Where to See White Snakes: The bamboo craft shop “Ikeda Bamboo Shop” on the approach to the temple keeps a family of white snakes, allowing visitors to actually see them.

Amulets and merchandise with a white snake motif are also sold, making them popular souvenirs and mementos of your visit.
